Garden Fever: Content-Led Navigation & E-commerce Optimization

A comprehensive responsive website and mobile app redesign for a local plant nursery, focusing on information architecture and microcopy to sustain community engagement during the pandemic.

The Content & Navigation Challenge

Rapidly changing COVID-19 shopping regulations created severe logistical friction, slowing down the procurement process for legacy customers. The existing, poorly executed website lacked an organized taxonomy and clear online shopping capabilities.

Users encountered significant navigation roadblocks, struggling to understand the new mandatory rules for in-store appointments and curbside pickup. This lack of clear instructional content and structural hierarchy left customers confused right at the point of sale.

Information Architecture & Site Taxonomy

Restructured the scattered legacy framework into a streamlined hierarchy to reduce cognitive load and guide anxious users.

  • Taxonomy Overhaul: Engineered a logical, intuitive site map that grouped disjointed inventory into clear categories (Plants, Garden, Shop, Consultations, Community).

  • Frictionless User Flows: Designed logical pathways allowing users to easily save items to a Favorites list, navigate the cart, and seamlessly schedule delivery or curbside pickup.

UX Writing & Microcopy Optimization

To position the brand as a helpful, accessible neighborhood resource, the user experience required precise, empathetic UX writing.

  • Navigational CTAs: Rewrote vague menu labels into explicit, action-oriented headers and calls to action (e.g., "Book a Curbside or In-store Appointment", "Virtual Gardening Consulting") to guide users through complex pandemic restrictions without inducing anxiety.

  • Transactional Microcopy: Resolved critical checkout confusion uncovered in testing by replacing ambiguous "Buy" and "Pay Now" options with definitive "Purchase" and "Continue Shopping" buttons.

  • System & Edge Case Copy: Engineered clear post-transaction success screens featuring explicit "Print Receipt" and "Email Receipt" confirmations to build user trust and verify task completion.

Usabilty Studies and Insights for the Iterative Design Process

Iterative Testing & Content Comprehension Metrics

Leveraged two rounds of unmoderated usability testing with 5 participants to validate copy comprehension and identify navigational drop-offs.

  • Data-Driven Iteration: Initial testing revealed users were confused by the basic navigation menu and could not locate scheduling options. By revising the UI text and elevating the "Book Appointment" CTAs directly to the login and home screens, the user flow became immediately intuitive.

  • Task Completion: Post-test iterations proved highly successful; ultimately, 80% (4 out of 5) of users found the redesigned payment process simple to navigate, and 100% (5 out of 5) found the new site content organized and intuitive.

Next Steps: Scaling the Experience

Accessibility & WCAG Compliance: Conduct comprehensive WCAG audits to ensure inclusive, barrier-free experiences across all user demographics.

Visual Autonomy: Develop Dark and Light mode toggles, granting users greater control over visual contrast and cognitive load.

Iterative Feature Testing: Execute follow-up usability studies to validate content comprehension and user flows for upcoming video integrations and expanded website booking schedules.
